Tour Sweden’s World of Volvo Before It Opens
Volvo, a name synonymous with safety and innovation, is set to open a breathtaking new museum—the World of Volvo in Gothenburg, Sweden. Positioned a mere 14 miles from the Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport and in close proximity to the Volvo Group headquarters, this new cultural landmark is more than a museum; it’s a comprehensive showcase of the brand’s commitment to automotive excellence and sustainable future. As we approach its grand opening on April 14, we were privileged to receive a behind-the-scenes glimpse of this architectural marvel, coincidentally launching 97 years to the day since Volvo’s first car, the ÖV4, rolled off the assembly line.
Architectural Marvel and Design Philosophy
Designed by the acclaimed Danish architecture group Henning Larson, the nearly 240,000-square-foot facility embodies the essence of Scandinavian design—simplicity, functionality, and connection to nature. Unlike its contemporaries like BMW Welt or the Porsche Museum, which dazzle with futuristic aesthetics, the World of Volvo stands out with its understated elegance. The structure is anchored by three gigantic tree trunks, symbolizing strength and organic growth, seamlessly integrating into the urban landscape of downtown Gothenburg.
The interior is a testament to sustainable architecture, using 2800 tons of lumber and repurposed materials from the local area, including lamp bulbs from the former SAAB gearbox building. The spruce and pine used throughout the building not only lend structural beauty but also fill the space with a calming, natural fragrance, enhancing the warm and welcoming atmosphere.
A Venue of Learning and Discovery
The World of Volvo is designed to educate and inspire. It houses several rentable conference halls and classrooms on the top floor, cleverly designed to shield visitors from the noise of the nearby highway. This educational enclave is perfect for hosting seminars, workshops, and corporate events, providing a backdrop that encourages innovation and creativity.
Interactive Exhibits and Engaging Experiences
As for the exhibits, Volvo has meticulously curated a variety of interactive and engaging displays. From VR simulations that demonstrate the dangers of distracted driving to hands-on activities like operating a mini Volvo excavator, the museum is a playground for both young and old. One of the standout exhibits features a dramatic representation of the impact of speed on car accidents, cleverly illustrated using a stack of wooden chairs.
Celebrating Volvo’s Legacy and Vision for the Future
The museum also features an array of Volvo’s historical models, futuristic concepts, and technological advancements. Highlights include the Volvo Experimental Safety Car (VESC), a pioneer in automotive safety features, and the iconic White Buses, which played a heroic role during World War II by transporting prisoners to safety in Sweden. The Volvo YCC (Your Concept Car), designed by an all-female team, is also on display, showcasing innovations tailored specifically for women, including gullwing doors and ergonomic features that accommodate items like a purse or a ponytail.
